(11 January 2017). The works that will be exhibited at the Italian Cultural Institute in San Francisco from 19 January until 24 February come from “Murats” also known as “Unico Regionale Arte Tessile Sarda” museum. “Sardinian textile production is little known outside of Sardinia and this exhibition aims to promote the handicraft and to relaunch the artists” according to the ICI website. The aim of the exhibition organised by the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco in collaboration with Sardinian Arts, is in fact to pay tribute to Sardinian textile art. The public will have the opportunity to admire ancient artefacts and contemporary Samugheo craft including some pearls of manufacturing tradition from Murats. The opening night will feature two artists: Isa Frongia and Anna Maria Pirastu. They will be given the task of illustrating the processes of “pibiones”: a traditional technique of weaving typical Sardinian grains. The word “pibiones” in Sardinian means grapes. It is the name given to small yarn loops protruding from the surface of fabrics forming a pattern. (PO / red)
