Ottawa – historic result for Parma ham which finally takes possession of its own name in Canada as a result of the FTA – CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement) – between the European Union and Canada approved today by the European Parliament. CETA introduces, among other things, a framework for regulating Geographical Indications which are recognised a special status and greater protection in the Canadian market. Specifically, the agreement provides for the coexistence of the name “Prosciutto di Parma” and the “Parma” brand currently under the Canadian company Maple Leaf. “It was a long-awaited milestone that rewards the tenacity of our producers that will finally sell our ham on the Canadian market with its proper name ‘Parma Ham’” stated Vittorio Capanna, president of the Parma Ham Consortium – (9Colonne)
