Nassiriyah. The first surgical mission of ‘Emergenza Sorrisi Doctors for Smiling Children’ will be in Iraq at the Nassiriyah Habbobi Teaching Hospital February 16 – 24. Many children in developing countries are born with severe facial malformations such as cleft lip and palate. Many other children are forced to live in areas of war and destruction suffering permanent and devastating consequences of the conflicts causing them serious burns and other wounds. Emergenza Sorrisi is an NGO that engages in favour of these children and organises surgical missions to the most difficult areas including Iraq, Kurdistan, Syria and Afghanistan. Since 2008 the Emergenza Sorrisi volunteers have made 11 surgical missions to Iraq, in the province of Nassiriyah thanks to which 1,143 children underwent surgery to reconstruct their cleft lips or palates..
