Rome – Noncommunicable diseases (Mnt) – primarily cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancer and chronic respiratory diseases – are responsible for most cases of disease globally. More than 80 percent of premature deaths caused by these diseases occur in low and middle income countries, but the majority of the deaths would be largely preventable. To address this emergency, the Italian development cooperation has to follow new paths to promote, together with partner countries, strategies for the protection of health and the prevention of non-communicable diseases, counteracting the risk factors – both at individual and community levels – and the attendant social consequences. It’s for this purpose that the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation has organized for Friday, March 17 a conference on the theme “Strengthening the prevention of non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries”. The conference aims to examine the existing prevention strategies, but will also be an opportunity to present the experience of Palestine where effective prevention policies were implemented.
