Tokyo. The Tuscan Pecorino DOP consolidates its presence in Japan. Tuscany’s excellence in cheese is on the list of ten Italian DOP (controlled designation of origin) cheeses protected by the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Japan, which was signed in the last few days after contacts started in 2013. The Treaty provides for the immediate abolition of customs duties for hard cheeses and a more gradual process for others. It also increases the quantities exported to the Japanese cheese market as well as recognising the protection of the designation of origin as a further guarantee to consumers. 18 DOPs inserted among the 71 European Geographical Indications recognised by the international agreement represent Made in Italy food in Japan.
