Souda. The European multipurpose Frigate (FREMM) ‘Virginio Fasan’ has taken on a leading role in the “Eunavfor Atalanta” operation, a European Union mission that operates between the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and Indian Ocean, to ensure surveillance and police presence in high seas to counter piracy. The ‘Virginio Fasan’ and its crew will be engaged in the Horn of Africa area by December. It left on its maiden voyage from the port of La Spezia on July 14th to an area that has seen constant engagement of Espero and the Carabiniere Ship in the last four months. Before heading to the area of operation, the ship stopped in Souda on the island of Crete, to test and brief the crew on Maritime Interdiction Operation by carrying out activities at NATO Maritime Interdiction Operational Training Centre (Nmiotc).
