(24 August 2017) Foreigners choose Matera as a wedding destination for its charm and history according to an article published by Martina Vacca on the UNESCO Heritage Site Journal. Vacca writes about the resilient town of Matera chosen by many foreigners as their wedding destination: “the romantic atmosphere that permeates Matera is obstensively expressed through the anachronism of its landscape which projects it into a timeless and surreal atmosphere”. The article focuses on the characteristics of a millenary town and its journey from being an embarrassment to the nation to being selected as the European Capital of Culture 2019. “The urban wonder of the Sassi and the succession of the different architectural styles of crypts and stone churches intertwine the Greek-Orthodox and Latin civilisations in front of the visitor’s eyes”
