London. The results of a research study on the effects of diabetes and oral microcirculation have been recently published on the international journal “Medical Science Monitor”. The study was lead by Professors Pietro Messina, Alessandro Scardina, and Roberto Citarrella of the University of Palermo. “The study was carried out with an innovative methodology: polarized light capillaroscopy” according to Scardina, Professor at the School of Medicine of the University of Palermo. “120 patients were enrolled and the microcirculatory pattern of the entire oral mucosa was assessed. We were able to highlight microcirculatory alterations in the oral mucosa correlatable with the duration of diabetes and therapy itself. Considering the close correlation between systemic disease and oral pathology, the method used becomes a leading role in the oral microcirculatory monitoring of diabetes and in the consequential early interception of diseases of the mouth in these patients”.
