Buenos Aires. For the “History and Opera” series, the exhibition “Venezia e Genova: tra patrizi e plebei” (Venice and Genova: Among Patricians and Plebeians) conference will be held on August 14th at the Italian Institute of Culture in Buenos Aires. Between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginnings of Classical Modernity, the two major maritime republics of the Italian peninsula – Venice, the aristocratic republic and Genoa, the maritime republic – crossed serious political conflicts involving very important political figures who sometimes had to act against members of the their own families. Thus, the Foscari, the Contarini, the Boccanegra, or the Fiesco were victims of their struggles for power. During the nineteenth century the aforementioned conflicts were revisited and updated in a romantic key through history, literature, and melodrama. Two works by Giuseppe Verdi retrace these stories that still resonate in the streets of both cities. (9Colonne)
