New York – On the occasion of the publication of The Novel of Ferrara by Giorgio Bassani (WW Norton & Company publishing house), a conversation with the journalist Judith Thurman and the author André Aciman – who edited the preface to the volume – will take place at the Italian Institute in New York. The event will be held on November 7th at 18:00. The Novel of Ferrara, by Giorgio Bassani, published for the first time as a one off as his epic masterpiece, brings together the six novels by Bassani, entirely revisited by the author at the end of his life: Inside the Walls, the Golden Glasses, the Garden of Finzi-Contini, Behind the Door, the Heron and the Smell of Hay. The Ferrara novel is not only about the people of Ferrara, but the city itself, which takes on a character and a voice deeply influenced by the Jewish community to which the narrator belongs. Infused with new life by the acclaimed translator and poet Jamie McKendrick, this seminal work seals Bassani’s reputation as “a silently insistent chronicler of the various threats to freedom in our time” (Jonathan Keates).
