(14 Feb) – In the recent past, it was possible to study only a few variables related to cancer simultaneously, sometimes only one. Hard to reconstruct a ‘big picture’ obtained from not many observations of the researchers, and in different experimental conditions. And there is not often a global view of the ongoing processes in the cell, a chance to examine the functioning of the genome. New technologies has made available highly reliable analytical methods to study the mode of expression of genes and proteins, changing radically the interpretation, the classification and the treatment of cancers. The research in personalized medicine is a developing science which aims at providing the most appropriate therapy for each patient via molecular dissection of cancer cells metabolic pathways. And this is the main subject of the conference to be held on March 8th at the University of Luxembourg, in the Sala Tavenas. Organized by the Italian Institute of Culture of Luxembourg, the meeting – entitled “Personalized Medicine in cancers treatment ” – will be addressed by prof. Marco Giorgio Paggi, oncologist, researcher and professor, now working at the Regina Elena Institute of Rome as head of the Laboratory C of the Department for the development of therapeutic programs, aggregated to the Department of prevention and cancer diagnostics. GENOMICS, TRANSCRIPTOMICS, PROTEOMICS: A BASE FOR PERSONALIZED MEDICINE
Genomics is the study of the genome, the complete DNA sequence of a cell, which comprises the entire genetic formation of an organism. Transcriptomics is the study of the transcriptome, the set of genes’ transcripts, especially the mRNA molecules. Proteomics is the study of the proteome, the set of the proteins expressed by a given type of cells.
