(Feb 15) – Eni’s exploratory missions in East Africa continue to bear fruit. The Italian company has announced a huge discovery of natural gas giant at the Mamba South 1 prospect, in the Area 4 Offshore Mozambique. An impressive discovery that will give a potential of 212.5 billion cubic meters (7.5 tcf) of gas. The well, located 23 km north of South Mamba 1 and 45 km from the coast of Cape Delgado, is located in water depths of 1690, for a final depth of 5330 meters. According to Eni, there were found 186 meters of mineralized gas sands with good petrophysical properties. During the production test, the first ever made offshore gas discoveries in the Rovuma area, the well produced a high quality gas, with a flow – forced by the infrastructure, of approximately 1 million cubic meters a day and a smaller volume of condensate. In the final configuration of production is estimated that each well will produce about 4 million cubic meters per day. And more, during 2012 Eni plans to drill 5 new wells in neighboring structures in order to enhance the high potential of Mamba that, that until today as reached a total volume of gas of about 850 billion cubic meters (30 tcf). THE TREASURES IN THE ROVUMA BASIN
Eni’s success in Mozambique is relatively recent. In March 2006 the company has awarded the license for the exploration of an offshore area located in the northern part of country, about 2,000 kilometers north of Maputo. The regione, known as Area 4, is located in the deep waters of the Rovuma Basin, covering an area of 17,646 km square and reaches a water depth of 2,600 meters. Area 4 is located in an unexplored geological basin and the initiative is part of Eni’s strategy aimed at identifying new areas of high mineral potential.
