(Feb 23) “It was a real surprise, we did not expect this award. That’s why we welcomed it with more enthusiasm and satisfaction. It is the proof of ten years of passion and commitment”. So speaks Gabriella Cirocco, principale of the Comprensivo Statale of San Giorgio del Sannio, in Benevento, that has recently received the European award for music didactis “L’école pour la musique”. “This is an international award given by the Directorate General for Education and Culture of the European Commission – Cirocco adds – that rewards our efforts to promote music in primary school”. “Our music lab and chorus is a UNICEF ambassador since several years, and it has been identified after a careful monitoring of European schools of all levels. We did not think at all to be ‘under observation’. The music – the principal says – can do a lot for children education. They socialize, learn to relate and stay together. We also give the opportunity to learn to sing and it’s nice that a school gives a chance like this, because not everyone has the opportunity to take private lessons”. The reasons for the award are remarkable: “For the commitment to promote music education in schools and in society”. “I share this long path with Dina Camerlengo, coordinator of the music lab. She is a Master with a capital M – Gabriella Cirocco says -, able to manage a chorus of sixty students”. The chorus “Si fa musica” also collaborates with the students of the Conservatory of Benevento. “We would like to perform on a national stage, it would be a great satisfaction for us. But for the moment – says the headmaster – we just think about education. We really care about the future of our children: among them are some real talent and we hope one day will go far”. (Gil)
