(May 14) Angelo Vassallo was a free and friendly man. He had strong entrepreneurial skills and was a convinced environmentalist. Everyone remembers him as an honest and courageous man, a nature lover able to turn a small corner of the Southern Italy, the Cilento, in a high profile tourist destination. Who knows the story of Angelo Vassallo also knows him as “The Mayor Fisher”, first citizen of Pollica, a small town in the province of Salerno He was brutally murdered by Camorra in 2010, probably on the night of September 5, and now his story has arrived in Brussels, where tomorrow he will be remembered at the European Parliament. The occasion proves how the courageous story Vassallo has not left the rest of the world indifferent. Gianni Pittella, Tomorrow, Vice President of the European Parliament, has strongly wanted this commemoration, in cooperation with the Foundation “Angelo Vassallo Sindaco Pescatore”. “I wanted this meeting,” said Pittella “To remember a good administrator. Angelo Vassallo, thanks to his work, has given insights and perspectives for future policy, and the Foundation ‘Angelo Vassallo’, born three months after the death of ‘Fisherman Mayor’, wants to continue the work begun by Angelo Vassallo through his work.” During the remembrance will be presented the book “The Fisherman Mayor” and screened the documentary “Al di la’ del mare”, realized by journalist Luca Pagliari. The short movie brings together images, testimonies and memories of an entire community devoted to his former mayor, a man who lived for 15 years aboard a fishing vessel and that in 1995 decided to defend his city against the mob.
