(27 Jun) – “Today, more than ever, we see a ‘new emigration’ wave. There are many young Italians living and working abroad. I am one of those, even if I’m not so young anymore. What drives us to leave? Not just the lack of work, but also the working conditions that many are forced to accept. There is no prospect of improvement and the conditions are the same, even when you’re 40. ” So speaks Salvatore Medici, journalist from Italy’s Campania who works and lives in Switzerland. Born in 1972, he writes for the online newspaper “Ticino online.” He tells us his arrival in Canton Ticino: “I graduated in Foreign Languages in Naples when I was 24. Then I passed the qualifying examination for the teaching of English. The waiting was too long so I started doing works of various kinds and slowly changing my path. I waited tables in England then I felt the need to return to the South, so I attended a marketing course and I worked as a bartender and for communications agency in Salerno. After that I started working as a journalist for radio and TV stations and provincial newspapers. Meanwhile, I attended a master’s degree in public communications and started a press office activity. I’ve been living in Switzerland for two years and now I’m an editor of an online newspaper”. Medici says he is satisfied with his experience abroad: “I found a job after only one month and a half and it is a really great job. Even if there is not the Order of Journalists and the employers have a free hand over layoffs, here there is so much fairness in relations between employee and employer. ” The desire to return to Italy is still strong: “I think I will return to Italy someday, but for the moment is just a desire. ” (Gil/Peg)
