(Jul. 19) – The Floating Mobile Hospital (FMH) is an Italian project that aims to build a floating mobile hospital designed to provide relief to coastal populations of Lake Victoria (Tanzanian side). The project has been chosen as an excellence in the healthcare sector and will be presented at the International Conference on Africa, scheduled for September in Rome. Professor Luigi Gentilini, FMH creator and president of the association of “Med e Med”, has confirmed the news and announced that Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda expressed great interest in this initiative, offering their support to ensure that the project will be brought to the attention of all African countries. The Floating Hospital will be fully equipped and functional hospital, with a reception room, operating room, childbirth and infant care and a center for infectious diseases. All this will happen with the support of telemedicine. For an initial period, only Italian doctors and students will work on the boat but in the future also local specialized workers will be involved. The FMH will be based on a catamaran hull thus providing an exceptional amount of available floor space. With its shallow draught it will be very well suited for use in all types of navigable waterways. (Red)
