(Sept. 4) – It was signed this morning, at the Albanian Ministry of Health, the third triennial agreement between non-profit association “Un cuore per …l’Albania” and the Ministry itself. The Italian association has been operating for over 10 years in Albania in the prevention and treatment of Mediterranean anemia and other hemoglobinopathies: hereditary and predictable diseases that can be treated with continuous transfusions or cured through a bone marrow transplant from a donor. In Albania has been transferred to the strategy implemented in the Italy’s Basilicata, a strategy of screening and information that allowed the elimination of the birth of infants affected by hemoglobinopathies. For 10 years now, all final year students of the schools of Vlora, Fier and Lushnje were screened, action that has made possible a census and the detection of more than 2000 carriers. The operation was made possible thanks to the hospital of Vlora, a clinic and laboratory dedicated to the study of hemoglobinopathies. Two doctors and several laboratory technicians have been trained to maintain the operation at the laboratory and the outpatients’ clinic.
