(Sept. 11) – The Museum of Modern art in New York will host until October 1 the first major exhibition in the United States dedicated to Alighiero Boetti. A complete retrospective, titled “Game Plan”, which covers the entire career of the artist born in Turin in 1940 and died in Rome in 1994. The exhibition celebrates the great Italian exponent of the Arte Povera movement, the conceptual complexity and visual beauty of his work through some 100 works: from his sculptural or objects as he preferred to call them, comprised of everyday materials including wood, cardboard, and aluminum, to the monumental Biro (ball point pen) drawing from 1973, with a title – “Mettere a mondo il mondo (Bringing the world into the world) – that points to some of Boetti’s ideas about art making that were fundamental to his practice: that the artist, rather than inventing, simply brings what already exists in the world into the work and that everything in the world is potentially useful for the artist. In the presentation of the exhibition, made possible by the generous support of two anonymous donors, the famous New York museum defines Boetti as “one of the most important and influential international artists of his generation.” The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Tate Modern in London, where the exhibition was hosted previously. Working in his hometown of Turin in 1960, among a small circle of artists including Luciano Fabro, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini and Michelangelo Pistoletto, Boetti has established itself as one of the most important artists of the Arte Povera movement.
