Nov. 20 – Adriana Maggi of Milan is the winner of the ERC Advanced Investigators Grant, thanks to her monitoring of the group of researchers who worked on the “Role of liver estrogen receptor in female energy metabolism, reproduction and aging: what about your liver sexual functions?” project. The Grant is a prestigious award that gives the European researchers in the Department of Pharmacological and Biomolecular Sciences of the University of Milan funding for nearly one and a half million euro over the next five years, allowing the team to study the effects of estrogen production on women’s health during menopause and aging. “The hypothesis that we want to search – explains Adriana Maggi – is that the decrease in estrogen production by the ovary has the primary effect of a change in the energy metabolism.” “We aim to discover – she continues – how to intervene pharmacologically to reduce metabolism errors caused by the lack of estrogen and thus improve women’s health, who now spend more than one third of their lives during and after menopause.”
