Dec. 28 – The European Powder Diffraction Conference (Epdic) gave its “Young Scientist” Award for 2012 to Kenneth Roy Beyerlein, a promising young researcher in the field of nanoparticles who had already won the title of best PhD at the University of Trento in 2011. The award, coveted and prestigious, is awarded every two years and was delivered to Beyerlein during the past weeks at this year’s conference, held in Grenoble, France. Beyerlein was recognized for the high level of his research on nanoparticles. The research took place during his joint doctorate in material engineering, between the University of Trento in the Department of Materials Engineering and Industrial Technologies, under Professor Paolo Scardi, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta. By virtue of this unique and advanced training, Kenneth Beyerlein was called to work in the team of the well-known researcher Henry Chapman in Hamburg at DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), one of the most prestigious research facilities in the world. His appointment involved the study of the synchrotron radiation’s sources and for projects involving the free-electron laser. “The Prize awarded to Beyerlein – said Paolo Scardi of the Department of Civil Engineering, environmental and mechanical engineering – is a good example of the international collaboration in research conducted by our university, and it helps highlight the level reached by researchers in the University of Trento in the field of material engineering.”
