Jan. 28 – “Tuscany-Europe 2020: New Frontiers of Silicon Photonics” is the theme of the conference scheduled for Feb. 1 in Brussels, at the European Commission. The meeting was promoted by the Institute of Technology, Communication, Information and Perception (TeCIP) at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, and by the National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunications (CNIT) and the Region of Tuscany. The conference – as stated on the Sant’Anna website – is sponsored by Epic, the European Photonics Industry Consortium. It will be the opportunity to present at the international level the center of integrated photonics located inside TeCIP, already welcomed at the national level during the Pisa presentation of Oct. 5, during the Internet Festival. The center has already contributed to the public consultation project launched in October by the European Commission regarding the future of Europe’s major infrastructure. The center provided information and advice, effectively pushing for the establishment of a common European reality in integrated technologies for Silicon Photonics. The center of integrated photonics absorbs some of the Sant’Anna and CNIT responsibilities thanks to the the co-located National Laboratory of Photonic Networks, which can act as a central service center in the design and production of Photonic Integrated Circuits for applications in telecommunications, sensing and biophotonics. The approach combines aspects of research and innovation systems with the subsequent realization of integrated circuits.
