Apr. 19 – Today and tomorrow, the Italian Film Studies Department at Yale University organizes, in collaboration with the Whitney Humanities Center, the international conference “A controversial identity: Italy and its recent film” following a seminar held in February 2011 entitled “Controversial modernity. Cinema, industry and society in Italian documentaries from ENI archives.” The conference, which confronts Italian and American scholars, provides an opportunity to take stock of the issue of modern Italian identity seen in a sociological, semiological and political perspective. The conference is organized by Francesco Casetti, professor in the Humanities Program and in the Film Program, and Penny Marcus, professor in the English Department. The conference is accompanied by the screening of several films, including Magnifica presenza, Cesare deve morire, Habemus papam, Io sono Li, e Italy Love It or Leave It. A similar event will be held in Cambridge, at the Harvard Film Archive, in September.
