Apr. 22 – 25 works of extraordinary beauty are being introduced to the American public. Michelangelo’s stage of maturity surprised and enchanted the world, after, only 36 years old, he had already impressed the Roman public with his cycle of frescoes that decorate the Sistine Chapel’s vault. The selection consists of architectural drawings and figures, already displayed at the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg, and will be open until June 30 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The works, selected for the Year of Italian Culture in the United States, include many important drafts never exhibited before in the United States. It includes several works highlighting the central chapter in the artist’s life and how, in the course of his unparalleled career, Michelangelo alternated between interpretations and representations of the divine and the profane.
