May 3 – As part of the XI International Graphic Art Biennial “Drypoint,” the City Gallery of Uzice (Serbia) will host the exhibition “Contemporary Italian Engravers.” The exhibition will remain open until July 26, and is the fruit of the collaboration between the Biennale of Uzice, the exhibition “Art and the Printing Press” in Cremona (two of the most important international biennials devoted to engraving) and the Italian Cultural Institute in Belgrade. The exhibition displays forty works of medium and large format, offering an overview of trends in engraving in Italy today. Made with a variety of techniques, from the more “traditional” (drypoint etching and aquatint by woodcut) to the most innovative and experimental methods, the spirit remains the preservation of “original” engraving, in which the matrix is engraved by the artist’s hand. The works in the exhibition, whose subjects range from figurative to abstract, from black and white to material solutions where the color is an essential element in the definition of expression of the image, highlight the strong personality of twenty Italian artists. The selection includes authors of three generations; alongside established artists on an international level, we find no less interesting for young artists for whom engraving plays a primary role in defining their poetic expression. The works presented will be donated in part to the International Collection of Graphic Art at the City Gallery of Uzice, already in possession of etchings acquired in the various editions of the Drypoint International Biennial, thus contributing to the study and knowledge of cultural heritage.
