July 31 – Serbo-Croatian, English, Romanian, Bulgarian, Slovenian, and Polish are the languages in which Venetian driving safety guidelines are being translated. The faculty and students of the Language and Cultural Studies Department of the University Ca ‘Foscari of Venice are behind these translations. This ABC manual will set the fundamental rules of safe driving and practical advice: a guide to road safety and mastering one’s vehicle without danger and surprises, touching upon issues of compliance, sleep and fatigue, intoxicating substances and drugs, driving and working long hours. The University’s language skills, with this brochure, are put at the service of and Europe’s institutions: “Health, safety, legality in road – Pills to bring always on the road” is the title of the manual designed by Inail (the National Institute for Insurance against accidents at work). Translated into six European languages by teachers, staff and students competent in those languages, the booklet is part of a larger project to raise awareness on road safety, brought on by the Venice Prefecture, Inail, the Territorial Directorate of Labour, the DMV, the Police, and the Carabinieri. Serbian-Croatian, English, Romanian, Bulgarian, are just some of the 40 languages taught within the Department: “Languages are a great capital within our university that we willingly put at the service of institutions for this awareness campaign – explains the director of the department, Professor Anna Cardinaletti – The University’s added value here lies in not only a profound knowledge of the languages at hand, but also of the cultural setting in which these pamphlets will be received.”
