Dec. 12 – Calabria native, born in 1992, clear eyes and a clean face: Miriam Karlkvist is the new revelation from the film “Il Sud è Niente,” a first work by Fabio Mollo in theaters these days. Miriam was chosen to represent Italy at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival in the prestigious “Shooting Stars” special program dedicated European talents. “Shooting Stars” is an annual program, unique in Europe, organized by the European Film Promotion, which selects and presents to an audience of international experts 10 young actors from across the continent. One of the most followed programs of the Berlinale, it “launched” over the years talents like Daniel Craig, Ludivine Sagnier, Rachel Weisz, Melanie Laurent and Nina Hoss. Born in Reggio Calabria from an Italian father and Swedish mother, Karlkvist convinced the selection panel with her interpretation of Grazia in the film, set in a small town on the Strait of Messina. The film – an intense story full of feelings and hopes – has proved to be a small international phenomenon, applauded after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. After its Canadian debut, the film set a record at the Rome Film Festival, where it competed in the independent section “Alice nella Città,” with an attendance of over 2,000 spectators at the first screening. In Rome, “Il Sud è Niente” also received the Golden Taodue Camera Award for Best emerging producer as a sign of further recognition. The film also stars Vinicio Marchioni, Andrea Bellisario (for the first time on the screen as well) and the participation of Valentina Lodovini. Karlkvist’s was described as “an impressive debut” capable of giving “a seductive vision of her future potential.” The actress plays the role of Grazia, an 18 year old girl who looks like a man and works with her father, Cristiano, who is a widower who sells classic pescestocco – a typical dish of the province of Reggio Calabria – in the suburbs. The film, a co-production between Italy and France, was produced by B24 FILM and Madakai, it arrived in Italian theaters Thursday, December 5 thanks to the distribution by Cinecittà Luce Institute.
