Ouistreham – French President François Hollande has invited the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano to represent Italy on June 6 for the solemn celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings. “I will participate on behalf of a people – Napolitano said in a statement – who broke their ties with Fascism and Nazism in 1943, and in the name of our national armed forces who fought with the Anglo-American forces. Two days before the Normandy landings, on June 4, 1944, the Allied forces liberated Rome also thanks to the heroic contributions of the Resistance. This is one of those decisive moments in history that should always be remembered – said Napolitano – along with many others that marked the crucial years between September 8, 1943 and April 25, 1945.” (9Colonne)
