The award was presented during ASPET, the Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology in San Diego, for his commitment and achievements in the field of pharmacology, and in particular for his work on metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGlu). Nicoletti studied the receptors’ pharmacological applications to treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s, neurodegenerative disorders, chronic pain and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The award was established by Dr. Robert Ruffolo, former president of research and development for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, whose name is associated today to the discovery and development of drugs for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and for the treatment of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
