Djibouti – Tomorrow the Andrea Doria will leave the Naval Station Mar Grande in Taranto to partake in operation “Atalanta” against piracy. The Doria will make its way to Djibouti, where on August 6 Admiral Jurgen Zur Muhlen of the German Navy, will cede control of the operation to Rear Admiral Guido Rando of the Italian Navy. Italy will be in charge of the mission for the third time since the operations began in December 2008, when the Council of the European Union decided to take action against maritime piracy off the coasts of Somalia. Admiral Rando will employ an international staff of 34 officers and non-commissioned officers, from 12 countries (Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and Spain).
