(Aug. 8) “A Nord di Capo Nord. Italiani sul tetto del mondo: Ny Alesund, la comunità più a Nord del pianeta” is the Community unreleased special to be aired on RAI Italia on August 15, a reportage by Paola Catapano with original music by Maestro Ezio Monti. A thousand kilometers north of North Cape, Svalbard is certainly not among the warmest places on the planet. With sudden storms, cold, ice and 3,000 polar bears on the loose, the nature there reaffirms its supremacy. Although it remains one of the most inaccessible and hostile places Earth, human communities here have settled there: Russian, Americans and Norwegians miners in late XIX and early XX century, as the bases for the first polar exploration or scientific research teams in recent times. To act as a guide in Svalbard, between not only the Italian community, at 79 degrees north latitude, there will be Paola Catapano, science journalist from the CERN in Geneva (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire). Thanks to her work we will discover the Arctic research station of the CNR (National Research Center) “Dirigibile Italia” and its flagship, the Climate Change Tower(Cct Tower), which, since 2007, employs Italian and foreign scientists in prohibitive condition. The special will follow the work of Italian scientists at the time Catapano’s visit, welcomed by Roberto Sparapani from the CNR in Rome, a scholar with 22 years of “Polar” experience.
