Aug. 19 – The Italian American Museum celebrates Italian cinema on August 28, with the screening of “Il Gattopardo,” Luchino Visconti’s 1963 masterpiece and winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes. The film, based on the novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa who was inspired by his great-grandfather, accounts perfectly for the tumultuous years of the Italian Risorgimento, the decline of the aristocracy and the rise of the middle class. The film, starring Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale, is a fresco of Sicilian life, brought to existence thanks to Visconti’s attention for detail and strong color saturation.
