Sept. 1 – Directly from Italy, the Mandala Dance Company has arrived in Chicago to take the stage of the Ruth Page Center for the Arts for two consecutive nights (Sept. 5-6). Organized by the Italian Cultural Institute and the Ruth Page Center Theater Subsidized Rental Program, the dance company will stage “Motus,” composed of “L’attesa” (2014), “Water Flowing” (2013) and “Punto Zero” (2012), choreographed by Paola Sorressa, music by Ólafur Arnalds, Max Richter, jp Tajeb, Ludovico Einaudi, and Julia Kent, and original music by Luca Longobardi. In “L’attesa,” different states of tension, anxiety, excitement, shyness and desperation take the stage, while in “Water Flowing” the protagonist is water: either calm or flat, life-giving or destructive, water’s symbolic meanings are innumerable. In “Punto Zero,” the theme is chaos: millennial philosophies state that order stems from chaos and ends in chaos in a perpetual cycle. What comes of the meeting of these two? Do they create harmony or trigger distruction?
