Sept. 10 – Not everyone knows that squalene is an essential emollient for the production of moisturizing creams, oils for children and facial cleansers. Widely used in cosmetics and medicine, the ingredient will now be produced in an innovative, sustainable and economical manner thanks to the new production process discovered by chemical researchers at the Palermo National Research Council and the Canadian University of Laval, in Quebec. The Italian and Canadian teams were coordinated by Mario Pagliaro and Serge Kaliaguine, who explain: “Green chemistry and nano-chemistry, when applied to substances such as squalene, offer various advantages. Renewing the production processes prevents pollution or damage to the ecosystems from which squalane originates; but it also reduces costs, making certain products that are usually difficult to access because of the high price more available.”
