Sept. 12 – The South Pole has a new point of reference at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Where Professor Alessandro Capra – director of the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” – has been given a new international assignment. Until 2016, Capra will coordinate a group of experts at GIANT – the Geodetic Infrastructure of Antarctica of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (Scar). Professor Capra has already been Managing Director of the Standing Scientific Group of Geosciences – SSG GS from 2004 to 2012. The Group of Experts is responsible for geodesic activities, or pole shift, in Antarctica, studying earth tides and movements of the earth’s crust. GIANT supports international collaborations to facilitate scientific research activities such as: permanent or periodical GPS station coordination on Antarctic territory; maintenance and updating of metadata and data for these stations and for gravity and hydrography observers; integration and dissemination of geodetic research results, dissemination and data exchange with other research facilities including Serce, a research project on Solid Earth Response and Cryosphere Evolution, and Scagi, the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Geographic Information.
