Sept. 23 – For the centenary of the Great War, the Italian Cultural Institute in Bratislava is organizing a meeting on the particular genre of music and lyrics that spread over the years of the First World War. Born to praise the efforts in the battlefields but also to inveigh against those who had dragged Italy into the conflict, soldiers sung those tunes while marching or in the trenches, while among the civilian population the main performers were those who suffered the most the harsh conditions of the conflict. Who wrote the lyrics? And the music? Are these original melodies or adaptations? All this will be discussed tomorrow at 6:15pm at the headquarters of the Italian Cultural with musicologist and journalist Cristina Scuderi. (Cle)
