Oct. 27 – A new home for 53 Haitian families is now a solid reality, about four years after the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti on January 12, 2010. The group of families in the Croix de Bouquet neighbourhood in the capital Port-au-Prince benefited from the direct intervention of the Italian Red Cross. The opening of the Village Haitien Solferino will take place on Wednesday, October 29: the design and financing, which are the result of generous donations, were organized by the Italian Red Cross and its Haitian counterpart, who employed exclusively local workers. The initiative aims to support the people of Haiti through the provision of housing facilities via a social inclusion program. The new housing development is intended as a concrete example of post-earthquake reconstruction, which follows strict anti-seismic criteria and provides each unit with a toilet. “The Italian Red Cross – said Francesco Rocca, National President and Vice President for the IFRC – was directly involved in the response phase to the earthquake. After more than 4 years, we are still taking part in a number of activities aimed at improving the living conditions of the Haitian people. This constant commitment has never failed, and it was possible thanks to the work of the volunteers and all those who contributed through donations. Their engagement has made it possible to cope with one of the most devastating disasters of our time.” (Sis)
