Daresalaam – For the second consecutive year, researchers from the Piaggio Bioengineering Center and the Pisa FabLab at the University of Pisa are heading to Africa to hold a training course in Biomedical Engineering. Scheduled for Dec. 8-12, the training focuses on the development of electrical devices that use open source technologies. The week-long course, sponsored in part by Uneca, will take place during the Innovators Summer School at the Muhimibili Daresalaam University of Tanzania. The Summer School is open to students enrolled in Biomedical Engineering courses in 9 African universities from 6 different countries (Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia). Bioengineering students, researchers and technicians at the Piaggio Center and Fablab strongly believe that both open source design for biomedical devices and human capital are the two requirements to improve healthcare in Africa. Pisa-based bioengineers played a key role in the organization of the curriculum and success of the Summer School. (9Colonne)
