Strasbourg – In a resolution adopted today, the European Parliament hopes that the diplomatic dispute between Italy and India on the case of the two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012 during the anti-piracy operations will soon be resolved with the judgment entrusted to Italian jurisdiction or through international arbitration. MEPs also want the return of the two riflemen, as their detention without charge is “a serious violation of human rights.” In the joint resolution approved by a show of hands, MEPs expressed “deep sadness” at the tragic death of two Indian fishermen, but also great concern about the detention without charge of the two Italian marines. During the debate last night, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini said: “It is a matter of respect of human rights, respect for the principles of the informational law, and the credibility of our anti piracy actions. It’s a matter for the European Union.” (9Colonne)
