Jan. 19 – A new production of Gioachino Rossini’s “Il Viaggio a Reims” by director Damiano Michieletto goes on stage in Amsterdam. The work will debut at the National Dutch Opera starting tomorrow: the show, co-produced with the Copenagen Opera and Opera Australia, will replicate on January 22, 25, 27 and 29, and on February 3, 5 and 8. “Since this is a work devoid of real drama, in realizing it I tried a thought that was more than just funny or brilliant, but also related to the reason the work was written – explained Michieletto – The story is set in a museum on the eve of the inauguration of an exhibition. All the characters are full of frenzy and anxiety for the event,. Some of them are real character: Madama Cortese for example is the director of the Museum. Others are historical figures, belonging to the paintings on display in the museum. The arrival of a large and mysterious canvas gives a twist to the story, impregnated in the historic coronation of Charles X, King of France.”
