Madrid – With a €5.1 billion turnover, up 1.4% compared to 2013, Italian wine continues to advance on foreign markets. The boom affected sparkling wines more than others, as the proseccos gain 14 percentage points of revenue abroad. This emerged from the Ismea analysis of Istat data for the 2014 period, which sees a switch at the top of the ranking for global wine exporters. After remaining for long the world’s leading supplier, Italy – with its 20.4 million exported hectoliters (+1% compared to 2013) – is now in second place, behind Spain (22.6 million hectoliters, 22% more than 2013). This astounding result stems from the plentiful harvest in Spain, and has brought about a significant reduction of prices, which led to an income decline of 5%. (9colonne)
