Venice – The “UNESCO Chair” was created to make the organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization a laboratory of ideas for international cooperation, committed to the development of peace, human rights and democracy. There are 645 UNESCO Chairs in the world, which act as a bridge between academia, civil society, local communities, research and policy actors. Of these 645, 20 Chairs are in Italy. One was established in 2009 at the IUAV University of Venice, under the title Social and Spatial Inclusion of International Migrants (SSIIM). UNESCO recently communicated to IUAV Dean Amerigo Restucci that the Chair will remain active at least until 2019, thanks to the research conducted in recent years, which procured funding for €620,000, resulted in more than 50 publications and numerous research reports, and created a network of over 200 international researchers, 20 of which work in Venice.
