New York – The increasing use of antibiotics in industrialized countries is contributing to the emergence of specific resistance genes in intestinal bacteria. This shows how uncontrolled use of antibiotics can lead to reduced effectiveness of treatments, with harmful consequences on human health. The above is one of the results that emerge from a new study conducted by a group of researchers within the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the University of Bologna, published in Current Biology. The study was conducted in the context of an international collaboration also involving the Max Planck Institute (Germany), the Institute of Biomedical Technologies CNR (Milan), the University of Nevada (USA) and the University of Bologna. The research is the first in the world to analyze the genomes of hundreds of beneficial bacterial species that inhabit the human intestines of the Hadzas – in Tanzania. The Hadzas are one of the last hunter-gatherer populations left on Earth. Their sequence was compared with that of Italian subjects from the urban area of Bologna. (9Colonne)
