June 16 – “Theater is the parable of the world,” once said Giorgio Strehler. The director summarized in these simple words the magic that only the stage can give, the emotion that comes from the music, costumes, and that very particular world that comes to life once the curtain is lifted. And now the magic of theater flies from Milan to Beit Jala, a town in the West Bank, not far from Jerusalem. The project “Passepartout della cultura” from June 17-28 brings the Piccolo Teatro of Milan to the West Bank, to share its expertise and know-how in a master class covering different disciplines at the Al-Harah Theatre Performing Arts Center – Parc Beit Jala. The Center is the first performing arts academy of the country, and is located near Bethlehem. Among the various formative international collaborations, “Passepartout” is a project that translates into concrete commitment the idea of free movement for artists in the Euro- Mediterranean, inspired by a model of “Cultural Erasmus” and the transmission of knowledge between cultures. From June 17-28, professionals from the Piccolo Teatro will be in Beit Jala to teach lighting design, costume and production to the students of the Parc, who come from different towns, villages and refugee camps in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Al-Harat Theater is a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 to enhance theater as an art form that has “the potential to change the lives of those who do it and those who watch it.”
