21 July, 2015 – A new technology for blind people comes from Pisa, where researchers from the Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics (Percro) Tecip Institute (Communication Technologies, Information, Perception) of Sant’Anna of Pisa developed an application that can help the blind take photos or self-portraits. Users, for now, operate the Tpad Phone, a smartphone with haptic screen (that can provide tactile sensations to the user at the time of its interaction). The Tpad Phone was the star of the “Student Innovation Challenge”, a competition held in Chicago a few days ago at the international conference “IEEE Worldhaptics 2015”. “In Chicago, the app resulted very interesting – explains Professor Antonio Frisoli – for its operativity and its possible application. The American media wanted to interview the developers and potential users. The possibility to equip smartphones with tactile sensors on the screen can bring significant improvement for some users, especially the blind. ” (Red)
