Ballerup – The Leo Pharma Research Foundation, which supports research for the pharmaceutical company by the same name, headquartered in the municipality of Ballerup, Denmark, has announced the winners of its annual award season: two scientists from Italy and Germany led the field in dermatological research. This year the first prize, the Gold Award worth one million Danish kroner (about €134.000) went to Nicola Segata, head of the laboratory of computational metanogenomics at the Center for Integrated Biology of the University of Trento (CIBIO). Segata has discovered new techniques for the characterization of microorganisms that colonize the human body: his discoveries were crucial in the study of microbial communities and in identifying the structure of human skin microbiome.
