September 21st, 2015 – A research by the Cardiology Misericordia Hospital of Grosseto received the title of best e-poster presentation at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in London. The study, “Incidenza di trombosi atriali nel flutter atriale da cardiovertire”, received a similar recognition in Naples, during the national congress of the Italian Society of Cardiovascular Ultrasound in April, winning second prize. The research, which lasted 17 years, focuses on “the risk of thrombosis and anticoagulant therapy during rhythm cardioversion, flutter and atrial fibrillation,” explains Dr. Alberto Cresti, cardiologist at the Grosseto hospital. “Basically – he continues – we have shown that, before patients with atrial flutter may retyrn to a normal rhythm, it is first necessary to administer either an anticoagulant therapy or subject them to a transesophageal echocardiogram, as in the case of atrial fibrillation. Before our research, there was no scientific evidence that this was the procedure to apply. Our study included more than a thousand patients, the highest number in the literature, thus giving statistically significant evidence to the entire research work. Clinical practice had already been in already in place for many years at the Cardiology and Emergency Hospital of Grosseto when we started our research”. (Cle)
