(1 February 2016) With more than 100,000 followers on Instagram, the Turin-born, Spanish-trained PixelPancho is one of the most famous and appreciated Italian street artists worldwide. In addition to having participated in some of the major street art festivals, PixelPancho has already exhibited in the most prestigious international art galleries – in Europe, the United States and Central America (including the Hoerle – Guggenheim in New York and Stolen Space in London). After gaining success abroad, the Italian capital is now ready for his talent, on display in an exhibition entitled “Androidèi” from 19 February to 3 April in the Varsi Gallery of Rome (Via San Salvatore in Campo 51). Inserted by The New York Times in the “36 Hours in Rome” guide, the Varsi Gallery is one of the most recent establishments of Rome’s street culture. Founded in 2013, the Gallery looks to the underground scene, welcoming the best artists of the moment. And so it was only natural for this place to host PixelPancho’s first Roman exhibition. The artist, who lives both in Italy and abroad, is known for mixing robots and gods, merging them into a single supernatural entity. “The human body is interesting from an anatomical point of view – said PixelPancho in an interview – the way it works is really fascinating and inspires all my designs.” For the artist, explaining natural phenomena and the cycle of life is an inherent need for humankind, which for thousands of years has appealed to supreme beings to seek answers and certainties. These evolve as time goes by, according to the needs of the cultures that produced them. In this sense, according to PixelPancho, man projects on robots his desire for perfection and immortality. “Robots don’t die – he explains – they are what will be left of us once we’re gone.” And so, robots are the new gods.
