Yaounde – “I’m monitoring closely, with attention and concern, the evolution and the deteriorating of the humanitarian situation in the North and East Cameroon,” said the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister with responsibility for Development Cooperation, Mario Giro. “The situation partly arises from the cross-border raids of Boko Haram and violence in the northeastern part of Nigeria, which resulted in the arrival of 70,000 Nigerian refugees in Cameroon, and 124,000 Cameroonian internally displaced persons – Deputy Minister Giro reported the alarming UN data. “Another deteriorating element is the continued droughts and floods – continued the Minister – which means that 2 million people, mainly in the north, are at risk concerning their food security status.” However, the Minister is keen to end on a positive note, as “the Italian cooperation system is already active in the region thanks to its NGO network”.
