(19 February 2016) Dario Fo’s political and social comedy “Sotto paga, non si paga!” was staged for the first time with great success in 1974. Translated into German by Peter O. Chotjewitz, the comedy can finally go on stage in Stuttgart (Fairkauf – 2handKaufhaus, Steiermärker Str. 53). Organized by Komitee Komplett e.V. Stuttgart in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of the city, the show stars Mariangela Toso and is directed by Markus Klemenz. For two evenings this weekend, on February 20-21, at 8pm German audiences will enjoy a play that Dario Fo, in 1974, intended as a parody of Italy’s economic situation, but that today, in times of inflation and economic crisis, is still relevant. The most surprising fact is how contemporary a play written 42 years ago still is today. Initially performed by Dario Fo himself and his wife, Franca Rame, the script seemed to anticipate events that took place shortly thereafter. The comedy is a whirlwind of events that intertwine in their political and social nature, as it analyzes the crisis of its time and the difficulty of the job market. The show was staged for the first time on October 3, 1974 at the Palazzina Liberty in Milan, restaged in 1980 and performed for another 2 seasons. The script was later updated in 2007. (red)
