Havana – The University of Florence could play a key role in the revival of the “Escuelas de Arte de Cubanacan” in Havana, strongly advocated for by Fidel Castro and Ernesto Che Guevara to encourage the teaching and dissemination of the arts among young Cubans. The building complex featuring unique Catalan vaults, was left unfinished and what is standing is today in a state of decay,. The Escuelas are today on the list of historical monuments at risk of collapse redacted by the World Monument Fund. And so, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in its preliminary phase approved a cooperation project between Cuba and Italy. The project was developed by Michele Paradiso, Associate in the Construction Science Department of the University of Florence, and it focuses on the restoration of the first of the five schools, the School of Theatre, originally designed by the Italian Roberto Gottardi.
